MicroMo Electronics’ brushless DC motors the ironless, self-supporting, skew-wound copper coil is a component of the stator. The mechanical commutation system in these motors is replaced by an integrated sensorless electronic unit with speed control. This makes MicroMo’s brushless DC motor a compact, reliable and extremely durable drive solution – perfect for continuous operation.
MicroMo offers the following Brushless DC Motors:
Features
Brushless DC Servomotors
Brushless DC Motors with Integrated Electronics
Flat Brushless DC Motors
Ø3mm and Ø5mm Sensorless Brushless DC Motors
Brushless DC Servomotor with Integrated Controller
The brushless DC Servomotors are designed for demanding drive applications under extreme operating conditions. The brushless DC servomotors are precise, have extremely long lifetimes, and are highly reliable. The lifespan of these motors depends solely on the bearings and electronic components used. On average, the lifetime may exceed 10,000 hours if the motors are operated within the recommended values indicated on the data sheet. These motors have exceptional qualities such as very low audible and EMI noise level. This design features the basic linear characteristics and absence of cogging torque of the traditional DC Motors System.
Autoclavable, Sterilizable Version for Medical Device Applications
This series of Brushless DC Servomotors is also available in an autoclavable, sterilizable version and is ideally suited for application in laboratory and medical equipment. The Brushless DC Servomotors design is changed by changing to an all stainless steel version of the motor, changing the lubrication, epoxy coating the motor coil, and conformally coating the PCB boards.
Sterilizing conditions for these Brushless DC Servomotors are:
Temperature of 134°C +/- 2°C
Water vapor pressure of 2.1 bar
Relative humidity of 100%
Duration of cycle of 20 minutes
Rated for a minimum of 100 cycles.
Servo amplifiers are available to drive the Brushless DC Servomotors. Other drive circuits for motion control can be offered to correspond to customers actual requirements.
Brushless DC-Motors with Integrated Electronics
MicroMo's brushless DC Motor utilizes the skew wound coil as the stator. The commutation electronics are integrated and replace conventional Hall sensors. The motors exhibit extreme long life times due to the lack of commutator wear. These brushless DC motors are ideally suited for continuous operation in applications like pumps, ventilators, and scanners.
Concept - Technology
These brushless DC motors with integral drive electronics combine the advantges of the skew wound coild technology with the lifetime benefits of electronic commutation. Teh motors are based on a three-phase ironless core, a bipolar rare earth permanent magnet and sensorless electronic commutation. To define the position of the rotor in relation to the rotating field of the coil, the back EMF is measured and processed. The position dietection of the rotor is sensorless. The design features the basic linear characteristics over a wide speed range and the absence of cogging torque just like the traditional brush commutated DC motors provided by MicroMo. The rotating magnet and iron flux path avoid iron losses and results in higher efficiency.

Application Information
These brushless DC motors were designed for continuous duty operation in applications such as small pumps, fans, choppers, and scanners. The lifetime of the brushless DC motors is only limited by the ball bearings, depending on the load and speed, but exceeds the life of brush commutated motors. The integrated electronic drive circuit allows a simple speed control operation, just like a conventional DC motor. Additional features such as bidirectional rotation speed command, frequency output, separate power supply of the coil for a wider speed range as well as customized application specific adaptation of the drive electronics are offered.
Mounting of the motors
These brushless DC motors must not be mounted in metal cases, as this would influence the operating characteristics. The mounting should be executed through the tapped holes placed on the aluminum flange, considering the screws recommended depth. It is not recommended to fasten the brushless DC motor by grub screws on the plastic housing. This could limit the mechanical function of the motor.
Flat Brushless DC Motors
The extremely flat design of the brushless DC motor is made possible by its self supporting coil. Instead of being mechanically wound, it is fabricated by means of photolithographic processes. The premium-quality nedodymium magnets (NdFeB) are designed for high driving power. As a result, these flat brushless DC motors are able to deliver considerable torque in ultra-flat dimensions.
The flat brushless DC motor configuration provides a solid basis for high-durability operations, thus making these flat brushless DC motors the perfect drive solution for a multitude of innovative products.
Ø3mm and Ø5mm Sensorless Brushless DC Motors
MicroMo Elecronics has also developed a special drive series for micro-engineering applications – the Ø3mm and Ø5mm Sensorless Brushless DC motor. This new version of the brushless DC motor uses the “System FAULHABER” skewed winding in combination with a rotor made of Neodymium rare-earth magnets to provide cog-free motion. The bearing system is now composed of jewel bearings. Due to their electronic commutation, the service life of these motors is only limited by the bearings. The Brushless DC motor can come with a plastic planetary gearhead and a lead screw for a complete linear actuator DC motor drive system.
Brushless DC Motors with Integrated Motion Controller
MicroMo Electronics' motion control positioning systems combine a long-life brushless DC-Servomotor with high resolution and a powerful motion controller in one super-compact package. The convenient "Motion Manager 3" application provides users with the support they need during startup and configuration. When used in conjunction with perfectly tuned precision gearheads, these all-round drive mechanisms provide you all you could ask from a top-class positioning device.
Motion Control – Setup and Operating Principle
The rare-earth magnet (NdFeB) of the non-ferrous rotor and its self supporting FAULHABER oblique coil gives the electronically commutated DC servo motor maximum power and dynamism despite its small size. The brushless commutation service life of the 90 W complete system is only limited by the service life of the bearing and the electronic components used. The powerful motion controller, together with the valuator, permits a whole host of positioning tasks and speed regulations with a resolution of 1/3000 revolutions. The integrated self-protection against overheating and overvoltage ensures reliable operation. The use of the latest DSP technology enables very high regular sensing rates and PWM frequencies that make the dynamic power pack score extremely well in terms of regulation and effectiveness
Motion Control Systems Advantages:
Controlled either by means of a CAN interface or RS232 interface
Smallest integrated CANopen Motion Controller with CiA DS301 V4/DSP402 V2
Exact torque regulation through improved power metering
Digital inputs for TTL and PLC can be configured compatibly
Ideal for safety-related applications through optional separate power supply
Firmware can be updated by RS232
Motion Manager 3
The high performance “Motion Manager 3” software from FAULHABER enables users to control and configure drive systems with motion controllers. Flexible options for creating sequential programs and comprehensive support for command entry from online help and plaintext menu make the system easy to use.
Motion Manager automatically searches for connected drive nodes and displays these in the “Node Explorer”. Transparent configuration dialogs and dynamic regulating parameter setting, make entry easy.
Graphical online analysis of drive behavior (e.g. as step response) and possibility to change the regulating parameter continuously, provide invaluable help during to enter commands. The program also supports the creation, transmission, and administration of sequential programs and parameter files. The program is rounded off with an online help and the integrated Visual Basic Script language.
